Covalent Bonds
- Covalent bonds share electrons between atoms. The stable balance of attractive and repulsive forces between atoms when they share electrons is known as covalent bonding.
- There are two types of covalent bonds:
* Non-polar covalent bond: Electrons are shared equally or near equally
*Polar covalent bond: Electrons are not shared equally because one atom’s force is stronger than the other.
- Bond Length:Is the distance between two bonded atoms at their minimum potential
- Bond Energy: Is the energy needed to break a chemical bond and form isolated neutral atoms (measured in kiloJoules per mole (kJ/mol))
- Bond lengths and energies vary with the types of atoms that have combined.
